Obituary

David Berg, 63, Wahpeton, ND, died Tuesday, October 12, 2004, at MeritCare Hospital in Fargo, ND, surrounded by his loving family, after a courageous battle with lung cancer. The Memorial Service and "Celebration of David's Life" will be held on Sunday, October 17, at 2:00 p.m. at the Immanuel Lutheran Church in Wahpeton with Rev. Morris W. Stephens, Jr. officiating. Visitation will be held Sunday from 1:00-2:00 p.m. at the church with fellowship and dinner following the service.

David Sheldon Berg was born on December 19, 1940, in Abercrombie, North Dakota, to Emil B. and Alma (Rostad) Berg. He attended school in Galchutt, ND, Abercrombie, ND, and the North Dakota State College of Science in Wahpeton, ND. He entered the United States Army on July 31, 1959, at Fargo, ND, and was honorably discharged on July 20, 1962, after serving overseas in both France and Germany. On June 20, 1964, he married Julie Ann Larson at the Trinity Lutheran Church in Great Bend, ND. The couple moved to Seattle, WA, where David worked for Ernest Hardware and Merry Manufacturing Co. In 1970, the couple moved to Wahpeton, ND, where they have since resided. David worked for the Valley Farmor, Inc., Wahpeton for several years. He drove oil truck for Richland County Co-op, and then started his own business, Berg Oil, in 1980. He also drove for several trucking firms in the area.

On January 21, 2003, David was diagnosed with lung cancer. He fought a hard battle with the loving support and care of his children, Amy Jo and Shawn Berg and his wife, Julie. David enjoyed trucking, spending time at the lakes, fishing, playing cards, traveling all 50 states with his family, country and old time music, baking his delicious rolls and especially visiting with family and friends. He was a member of the Immanuel Lutheran Church, Wahpeton, ND, and a former member of the Wahpeton Jaycees and Wahpeton Lions Club.

He is survived by his wife of 40 years, Julie Berg, Wahpeton, ND; two children, Amy Jo Berg (Jeff Lucas) Litchfield, MN, and Shawn Berg, Fargo, ND; three brothers, Wesley (Molly) Berg, Marble Falls, TX, Willard "Bill" (Judy) Berg, Springfield, Ill., Burton (Kristie) Berg, Wahpeton, ND; his sister, Shirley M. (Ray) Hingst, Wahpeton, ND; his mother-in-law, Margaret Hingst, Wahpeton; his brother-in-law, Lyle Haakenson, Hatton, ND; many nieces and nephews; five special God daughters, Jane Ford, Kristin Kellogg, Kim Girard, Lisa Leeman and Jana Gwynn,; his extended family the past two years, the network team at the Roger Maris Cancer Center, MeritCare Hospital 7th floor staff in Fargo, ND; staff of MeritCare Clinic in Wahpeton, ND, and St. Catherine's Living Center, Wahpeton, ND.

He was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers, Marlin "John" and Emil "Ole" Berg; a sister, Ramona Haakenson; sisters-in-law, JoAnn Berg, Ruth Berg and Betty Berg; great niece, Meagan Berg; and a nephew, Gene Berg.

Vertin-Munson Wahpeton Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
