Ron was born on November 22, 1946, in Fargo, North Dakota, to Clarence and Mildred (Haverland) Berg. He spent his childhood helping on the family farm near Mooreton, North Dakota, and attended school in Galchutt and Wahpeton. Later, he pursued welding studies at the North Dakota State School of Science. He also earned his commercial pilot's license, which led to a career as an agricultural spray pilot. In addition, he spent several years as an owner-operator over-the-road truck driver.
Ron's passion for racing began at an early age and remained a lifelong pursuit. Over the years, he owned and drove many race cars, was a member of the Mid West Wild Bunch, and enjoyed supporting fellow racers as a valued member of their pit crews. He was also an accomplished competitive shooter, earning many awards while participating in a sport he loved. Aviation was another enduring passion. He owned and flew a variety of unique aircraft and especially enjoyed sharing his love of flying with family. Ron also played and coached softball, creating lasting memories both on and off the field.
Ron married Jean Hollyfield in 1969, and together they welcomed their daughter, Tina. Ron later married Linda Wanek. Their years together were filled with love, companionship, and unwavering devotion.
Family was one of Ron's greatest sources of pride and joy. He was immensely proud of his daughter and granddaughter, and treasured time spent with his great-grandsons. He was eagerly awaiting the arrival of his great-granddaughter, expected in August.
Ron is survived by his wife, Linda Wanek, Doran, MN; daughter Tina (Jim) Lockbaum, Oconomowoc, WI; granddaughter, Khia (Kyle) Paulson and their children, Knox, and Crew, Roberts, WI; siblings, Lynwood Berg, Fayetteville, NC, and Memory (Kenny) Mauch, Mooreton, ND; his sisters and brother-in-law; Patty, Janie, Mary, Karen, Robert (Kim) and Jennifer; as well as many beloved nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Clarence and Mildred; brothers, Clarence Jr., Dennis, and Merlin; sister, Doreen Heitkamp; and brother, Kenneth Berg, who died in infancy.
The family extends its sincere gratitude to the compassionate caregivers and staff at CHI St. Francis Health and Sanford Medical Center for the exceptional care and support provided throughout Ron's illness.
