Obituary
John Edward Groneman, 82, passed away peacefully on Crow Wing Lake in Brainerd, Minnesota surrounded by his family November 16th, 2018 after a valiant battle with cancer. John, born in Enid Oklahoma to Edward and Fern Groneman (Hardwick), was raised in Paonia, Colorado on an orchard farm known for its peaches, apples and cherries.
After graduating from high school in 1955, John attended Colorado Mesa University and then Colorado State University where he earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Engineering. Johns engineering career was primarily in the sugar beet industry which took him from Colorado to Ohio in 1965 and then to Wahpeton, North Dakota in 1974 where he retired as Vice President of Engineering at Minn-Dak Farmers Co-Op. John was a long time resident of Wahpeton until he joined his daughters in Brainerd Minnesota in late 2017.
John loved spending time at the family lake cabin on East Battle Lake; fishing, gardening, refinishing furniture, and visiting family. His true passion was designing and fixing anything broken or in need of repair or finding a way to repurpose a piece of wood that remained from a prior project. John was a quiet peaceful man of few words, but when he spoke he truly made an impact on those willing to learn from what he had to say.
John is survived by his daughters Melissa Groneman Royle (partner George Thomas), Greenwood Village, CO, Marla (Groneman) and Patrick DeRosier, Brainerd, MN and grandsons Hunter and Cole, Brainerd MN. He is also survived by his step children Judy Benn, Dallas TX and granddaughter Maggie, Ted and Sue Benn, Irving, TX and grandchildren Davis, Parker and Ashton, and Kristina (Benn) and Rick Kominek, Albuquerque, NM, and grandsons Zane and Seth. He is preceded in death by his wife Pauline Groneman, Brother James Groneman, and Parents Edward and Fern Groneman.
A celebration of life will be held November 26th, at Prantes restaurant in Wahpeton ND from 4-6pm. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Colorado Mesa University at CMU Foundation John E. Groneman Endowed Scholarship, 1450 N. 12th Street, Grand Junction, CO 81501, 970-248-1902.
