Snowmobile mishap claims Haugen girl
By DAVE YOUNGQUIST Daily News Writer
Fatal tragedy has struck the Bernard Haugen family for a second-time in as many years. Kimberlee Jo Haugen, 18-year-old daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Bernard Haugen, 1305 Westmore Ave., Wahpeton, died Saturday, Feb. 12, from injuries sustained in a snowmobile accident about 3 p.m. 15 miles northwest of Brainerd, Minn., near Lake Sylvan on what is known as "Camp Jim Road."
The Haugens had lost their son, Donnell Jay, in a motor vehicle accident, May 26, 1981, near Otter Tail Lake, Minn. Donnell and a friend, Scott Allan Johnson, son of Mr. and Mrs. Byron Johnson, 1312 14th Ave. N., Wahpeton, were to have graduated from Wahpeton Senior High School the next day.
In Saturday's mishap, according to reports from the Minnesota Cass County Sheriff's Department at Walker, Minn., Kimberlee was a passenger on a snowmobile driven by Steven Dye, 18, 306 Sixth St. N., Breckenridge, a friend of hers. He is a senior at Breckenridge High School.
According to investigators Dye was attempting to make a turn when he apparently lost control of the snowmobile. The snowmobile then hit a "windrow of snow caused by snowplowing." She was then thrown from the snowmobile striking a steel pole. Officials stress that although she died of head injuries, she was wearing a helmet at the time of the mishap.
She was first taken to a Brainerd hospital and was being transferred to a St. Cloud Hospital when she died enroute near Little Falls.
There were no other injuries reported.
Kimberlee was a senior at Wahpeton Senior High School.
The funeral will be at 11 Wednesday at Bethel Lutheran Church, Wahpeton, Rev. Marvin Hartmann officiating. Burial will be in Fairview Memorial Gardens, Wahpeton.
Visitation is Tuesday afternoon and evening at Vertin's-Wahpeton Funeral Home Chapel and at the church for the hour prior to the service. A family prayer service has been scheduled at the chapel.
Casket bearers will be Mark and John Haugen, Steve and Tom Ziegler, Earl Gault, Mark Krick, Terry and Chad Haberstroh.
