Obituary

Jim was born June 3, 1916, in Alexander, ND to Robert P. and Mary (Lokken) Horton. His father died when Jim was only 5 years old, and he was faced with the task of helping his mother and 4 sisters manage the homestead in western North Dakota. He graduated from Concordia College, Moorhead, MN in 1939, and taught school in Murdock, MN before joining the US Navy. His WWII combat experience was aboard the battleship USS Mississippi. It was during that time he married his college sweetheart, Marcelle Reitan. Upon discharge from the Navy, he attended NDSSS and eventually was hired as an instructor. Jim obtained his Master degree from Colorado State University, and retired from NDSSS in 1981 as VP of Academic Affairs. His involvement in trade and technical education extended all the way up to the national level. After retirement from NDSSS, Jim was selected to lead Lake Region Community College for two years at Devils Lake, ND. Jim's leadership skills allowed the college to not only remain open, but it continues to be a successful educational institution with a bright future.

His life long dedication to community service was exemplified by his pivotal roles in Bethel Lutheran Church, American Legion, VFW, Son's of Norway, Wahpeton Eagles, and a charter member of the Kiwanis Club, and the Alphean Male Chorus.

He is survived by his wife, Marcelle 'Marcie' Horton; four children, Judith Gregory, Toronto, Canada, Colleen (Don) Koskey, Princeton, MN, Robert (Greta) Horton, Glastonbury, CT, Tim (Kathy) Horton, Anchorage, AK; and six grandchildren, Tania and Victoria Gregor, Toronto, Canada, Nicole and Brian Koskey, Minnetonka, MN, Eric Horton, Charlottesville, VA and Kari Horton, Manchester, CT.

Jim was preceded in death by his parents; and his sisters, Cora, Esther, Louise, and Ruth.
