Obituary
Rueben O. Johnson, 95 of Fargo, ND, formerly of West Fargo, ND and Colfax, ND passed away on Sunday, December 21, 2014 at Bethany on 42nd in Fargo.
Rueben Orton Johnson was born on November 7, 1919 at Dwight, ND to Arthur C. and Mary (Christopherson) Johnson. He went to school in the Dwight and Galchutt area. In 1936 he spent a short time in the C.C.C.s. On September 15, 1940 he married June O. Isackson at Bethany Lutheran Church in rural Abercrombie, ND. He worked for Swift & Co. in Breckenridge, MN as a route buyer. He spent 1944-1945 in the Army in Europe during WWII where he earned the Bronze Star with Oak Leaf Cluster for heroic achievement in battle, the Good Conduct Medal, the WWII Victory Medal, the European-Middle Eastern Campaign Medal, the Combat Infrantryman Badge and the WWII Honorable Service Lapel Button. In 1946 the family moved to Nansen Township and started farming, he went to Ag School under the G.I. Bill, later purchasing the Isackson farm. In 1963 he started the Johnson Insurance Agency. In 1971 he quit farming and moved his agency to West Fargo, retiring in 1981. He was a member of the Galchutt American Legion Post 282 for 69 years, where he served as Post Commander and was the last of the original charter members. He was also a member of the West Fargo VFW, the C.C.C.s and was a 4H leader in Richland County for many years. He served on the church council of Galchutt Lutheran Church and Faith Lutheran Church in West Fargo, where he was currently a member.
Rueben enjoyed farming, bowling, spending time with his family, visiting with friends, their trips to California and Las Vegas and winters spent in Arizona and many summers at East Lost Lake.
Rueben is survived by his 2 daughters, Judy (Gary) Sumpter of Pelican Rapids, MN and Renee (Joe) Speidel of Wahpeton, ND; daughter-in-law, Jackie Johnson of Liberty, MO; 7 grandchildren, Thom Johnson, Tami Bartram, Jennifer Bartholomew, Todd Johnson, Jodi Nielson, Stacy Osborn and Megan Halstenson; 3 step-grandchildren, Shelley Ugarte, Kyle Speidel and Casey Foltz; 17 great-grandchildren; 1 great-great-grandchild; 3 sisters-in-law, Erma Johnson, Pearl Lee, Lois Zarling and many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, June; son, Bruce; 3 brothers, Chester, Marvin and Glenn; 2 half-brothers, Wesley and Vernon; great-grandson, Matthew Johnson and his son-in-law, Gary Halstenson.
Honorary pallbearers are the American Legion and Veterans of Foreign Wars, his grandchildren, great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren.
Active pallbearers are Marlyn Johnson, Doug Johnson, Orlin Bakken, Larry Duttenhefer, Dewey Holtz and John Haverland.
Funeral Service: Saturday, December 27 at 11:00 am at Faith Lutheran Church in West Fargo with visitation from 10:00-11:00 am at the church. Interment: Fairview Cemetery in Wahpeton, ND. West Funeral Home & Life Tribute Center
