Velma Johanson

Velma was born March 27, 1924, to John and Annie (Albright) King on a farm near Sonora, ND. Velma worked at Cal's Diner in Wahpeton where she met her husband Leonard Johanson. They were married on June 11, 1946; the couple had six children. The family lived in several places and finally made their home in Wahpeton, where her husband owned and operated Johanson Body Shop. Velma worked for Wahpeton Laundry, Nash's Retirement Center, Kelly's Steak House and Lounge, all of Wahpeton, and Uncle Jim's in Breckenridge. When Velma retired she did day care in her home. Velma moved to the Leach Home in May of 2010 and she entered St. Francis Nursing Home in May 2014.

Velma was a member of Grace Lutheran Church in Breckenridge, where she was baptized. She enjoyed dancing, playing cards, listening to music, crocheting, working on puzzle books, and especially spending time with her family, grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and great-great-grandchildren.

Velma is survived by her six children: Merle (Carol) Johanson, Rita (Delbert) Steffens, all of Fairmount, ND, Marlys Krause, Wahpeton, Renee (Roger) Gilberg, Nashua, MN, Barbara Johanson, Wahpeton, and Bernie (Betty) Johanson, Wahpeton, 15 grandchildren, 34 great-grandchildren, and 5 great-great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by parents, John and Annie King, her husband, Leonard on May 13, 2008; her infant twin sisters, her brother John King, her twin sister, Violet Daugherty, and two sons-in-law, David Krause and Virgil DeVine.
