Obituary
Leonard was born September 7, 1925 in Lisbon, ND, to Mathias and Albertina (Nelson) Johanson. He grew up and attended school in the Lisbon and Gwinner, ND area. He moved to Wahpeton where he was baptized at Grace Lutheran Church, Breckenridge.
Leonard married Velma King on June 11, 1946. The couple lived in Fairmount, ND where they started their family of six children and also operated his auto body shop. They later moved to Wahpeton where Leonard worked for WW Wallworks in Fargo, Thompson Motors, Breckenridge, before he started and operated Johanson's Body Shop, Wahpeton. Leonard sold his business to his son Bernie in 1978 but continued to work until 1988 when he retired. He stayed active doing odd jobs in his garage. He entered St. Francis Healthcare Campus in 2004.
Leonard was a member of Grace Lutheran Church, Breckenridge; and enjoyed hunting, fishing, dancing and playing cards.
Leonard is survived by his wife, Velma Johanson, Wahpeton; six children, Merle (Carol) Johanson, Fairmount, ND, Rita (Delbert) Steffens, Fairmount, ND, Marlys Krause, Wahpeton, Renee (Roger) Gilbert, Nashua, MN, Barbara Johanson, Fargo, ND, Bernie (Betty) Johanson, Wahpeton; 15 Grandchildren; 31 Great-grandchildren; his brother, Mervin Johanson, California; his sister, Mabel Moore, Oakes, ND; and several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Mathias and Albertina; two brothers, Neil and Chester; and four sisters, Myrtle Margret, Mayme, and Mavis.
