Obituary
Arthur W. Johnson
Arthur W. Johnson, 87, Wahpeton, died Tuesday, June 28, at St. Francis Hospital, Breckenridge. The funeral will be at 2 Friday at Bethel Lutheran Church, Wahpeton, Rev. Marvin L. Hartmann officiating. Burial will be in Fairview Memorial Gardens, Wahpeton. Presentation of the American Flag will be by the Wahpeton American Legion.
Visitation is Thursday afternoon and evening with a prayer service at 7:45 at Vertin's-Wahpeton Funeral Home Chapel. There will also be visitation at the chapel until 11 a.m. Friday and at the church for the hour prior to the service.
Arthur William Johnson was born Aug. 3, 1895 in a sod house at Dwight to John and Minnie (Thompson) Johnson. He was raised there and farmed with his father and operated a steam engine for his father. He served in the Army during World War I. He married Mabel Ehrens Nov. 8, 1926 at Breckenridge. They farmed at Dwight Township until 1942 when they moved to Wahpeton. In Wahpeton he was employed by the Wahpeton Park District for 15 years. He retired and continued to live in Wahpeton.
He served as Dwight Township Assessor. He was a member of Bethel Lutheran Church and a life member of the Wahpeton American Legion.
Survivors include his wife, two sons and two daughters, Gerald, Wahpeton James, Charveloix, Mich.; Mrs. Eldon "Bud" (Lois) Thiel, Moorhead; Mrs. Parnell (Phyllis) Hagen, Wahpeton; 11 grandchildren, 17 great-grandchildren, and four sisters, Mrs. Fern Knudson, Mrs. Henry (Swanhild) Syverson, Mrs. Miranda Oberg and Mrs. Robert (LuVern) Doleshy, all of Wahpeton.
He was preceded in death by three brothers and two sisters.
Casket bearers will be grandsons: Greg, Joel, and Dale Johnson, Terrence and Timothy Thiel, and Perri Hagen.
