Obituary

Walter Kackman

Walter Kackman, 68, Wahpeton, died Tuesday, June 22, at St. Francis Hospital, Breckenridge. The funeral is tentatively scheduled for Friday at 10:30 a.m. at Immanuel Lutheran Church, Wahpeton, with Rev. Ernest Bartels officiating. Burial will be in Fairview Cemetery, Wahpeton.

He was born Sept. 11, 1913, at Hankinson to Fred and Florence (Gebro) Kackman. He was raised near Lidgerwood in Duerr Township. He married Lorene Hoefs June 16, 1936, at Lidgerwood. They lived in Lidgerwood where he was employed at Standard Oil Bulk Company.

In 1943 they moved to Portland, Ore. where he worked in the shipyards for three years and for the fire department for two years. They lived at Wales, N.D., for five years where he was employed for Standard Oil. In 1954 the couple moved to Wahpeton. He was employed at Vertin's Furniture Company (now Caspers). He attended Peace Officers Training at Valley City, and was employed by the Wahpeton Police Department for two years. He was then a security officer at North Dakota State School of Science for 18 years, retiring in 1976.

He was a member of Immanuel Lutheran Church.

Surviving are his wife, Wahpeton; one son, Darrell, Casselton; two daughters, Mrs. LaVy McGray, Wahpeton, and Mrs. Duane (LaVonne) Manthie, Wahpeton; his mother, Mrs. Fred (Florence) Kackman, Wahpeton Health Care Center; one brother, Herbert, Lidgerwood; one sister, Mrs. Gladys Kohoutek, Lidgerwood; six grandchildren and three step-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his father, one brother, and an infant grandson.

Vertin's-Wahpeton Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
