Obituary

Judith Marie Karvonen, 74, Duluth, Minnesota, passed away Friday, Nov. 11, 2016 at St. Luke's Hospital in Duluth.

A memorial service was held Sunday, Nov. 13, 2016 in Duluth.

Judy was born Feb. 1, 1942 to John and Edith (Nanapush) Champaign in Belcourt, North Dakota. Her grandparents raised her until she was taken away and sent to live in the Wahpeton Indian School.

Years later after college, Judy returned to Wahpeton to work at the Indian School and was instrumental in changing the school to a more kind, therapeutic setting for teenagers. She went on to work for various places throughout the years.

Judy married Ardell Grawe in 1961 and they had four children and made their home in Wahpeton, North Dakota.

She married Wesley Karvonen April 15, 1990 and they made their home hear Fredonia, North Dakota, until 2009 when they moved to Enderlin, North Dakota. A year after Wesley's death she moved to Duluth. Judy will be remembered for her positive, upbeat, happy and sassy approach to life.

Judy is survived by her daughter, Brenda (Steve) Gregorich, Duluth; sons, James (Sheila) Grawe, Wahpeton, and Jeffrey (Debbie) Grawe, Aurora, Colorado; a brother, Joe (Kris) Desjarlais, Seattle, Washington; 14 grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents, John and Edith; grandparents; husband, Wesley; brother, Frank Desjarlais; and son, Jason Grawe.
