Obituary
Esther Katharine Wilhelmine Koppelman (nee Schradieck) was born October 21, 1910 in Summit Township to Henry and Margaretha (Wiebusch) Schradieck. She was baptized, confirmed and married at St. John's Lutheran Church, Tyler, ND. Esther attended elementary school in Summit Township. At the age of 16, Esther and her sister Elfrieda assumed homemaking responsibilities and helped to raise three younger siblings because of their mother's death.
On June 8, 1930 Esther married Elroy Koppelman. They began their seventy-two year marriage living with Elroy's parents on the farm homesteaded by Elroy's grandfather and farmed by Elroy. Esther worked hard and was truly Elroy's helpmate. They were members of Trinity Lutheran Church, Great Bend, ND where Esther taught Sunday School and sang in the choir for many years. She was also very active in the Lutheran Women's Missionary League.
In April 1977 they moved to Wahpeton, ND where they enjoyed retirement. Esther entered St. Catherine's Living Center in March of 1999, living there until her death on February 7, 2008. Elroy joined her at St. Catherine's in July, 1999 where he resided until his death on March 16, 2003.
Esther excelled as a homemaker. She was an excellent cook and her library of cookbooks numbered over 300. She enjoyed reading them and trying new recipes. There was "love" in the food she prepared for family and friends. She also enjoyed gardening and sewing. Esther was a charter member of the Summit Homemakers Club, and active in 4-H when her daughters were involved.
Many hours were spent doing crossword puzzles. She was also an excellent Scrabble player. An avid bowler, she bowled on several leagues as a regular or substitute.
Her faith in God gave her strength throughout her life. She was a loving wife, mother, grandmother and friend.
Esther is survived by her three daughters, Mavis (Bill) Hamann of Wahpeton, Monica (William) Stutsman, Pelican Rapids, MN, Bonnie (Curtis) Thorfinnson, Bloomington, MN; eight grandchildren, Karla (David) Bucknall, Rapid City, SD, Kathy Roden, Albertville, MN, Kyle (Stacey) Enochson, Glencoe, MN, William Stutsman, Duluth, MN, Hal (Rachel) Stutsman, Bismarck, ND, Joel (Teri) Stutsman, Duluth, MN, Brent Thorfinnson, Rosemount, MN, Kelli (Craig) Risnes, Alexandria, MN; 15 great grandchildren, Katrina, Joshua and Melissa Bucknall, Tom and Krista Roden, Chelsi, Coby, Jacob and Jonah Enochson, Sam, Taylor and Molly Stutsman, Michael Thorfinnson, Ella and Ana Risnes; her two sisters, Elfrieda Koppelman, Fargo, ND and Ruby Wahl, Fergus Falls, MN; her sister-in-law Doretha Schradick, Wahpeton; and several nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Elroy; son-in-law, William Enochson; two brothers, Elmer and Raymond; an infant brother, and sister, Edward and Elizabeth; three sisters-in-law; four brothers-in-law; and a nephew.
