Bertha Lum Formerly Wahpeton
Mrs. D. Eldon (Bertha L.) Lum (no age given), formerly Wahpeton, died Thursday morning, Sept. 4, 1986, at her home in Rancho Bernardo, Calif. The funeral service will be Tuesday at 11 a.m. at United Church of Christ (Congregational) Wahpeton, with the Rev. Kenneth Trana officiating. Burial will be in Fairview Cemetery.
Visitation will be Monday afternoon and evening at Vertin's Wahpeton Funeral Home Chapel.
Bertha Louise Best was born in Farmington, Minn., to David C. and Ida Johnson Best. She moved with her parents to McHenry, N.D., where her parents operated a general store for many years. She was raised there and graduated from high school at McHenry.
She graduated from Valley City State College and taught elementary school at Sanborn, Gilby, and Fargo.
She married D. Eldon Lum July 31, 1931, at First Congregational church, Fargo. They lived in Wahpeton 51 years where Mr. Lum and his brother Donald published the Farmer Globe, predecessor to the Daily News. Three years ago they moved to the San Diego, Calif., area.
She was a deacon emeritus of the United Church of Christ, Wahpeton, and was active in the women's society and taught Sunday School and was Sunday School superintendent. She was past president of Chapter J, PEO, and was past matron of the Wahpeton Eastern Star. She was a member of the women's auxiliary from the beginning of the Bois de Sioux Golf Club. She was past president of the Balmoral Golf Club Women's Association, Battle Lake. As wife of past district governor, she contributed to Rotary International for many years and was made a Paul Harris Fellow in 1986. She was a member of Rancho Bernardo Community Church.
She is survived by her husband of 55 years, two daughters, Mrs. James (Gretchen) Moffet, Minneapolis; Mrs. Myron (Susan) Fleming, San Diego, Calif.; four grandchildren, David and Martha Moffet, Tracy and Adam Fleming; two sisters, Mrs. David (Selina) Hume, Sun City, Ariz.; Ruth Ferning, New Ulm, Minn.; one brother, Donald J. Best, Minneapolis.
She was preceded in death by her parents.
