Obituary
Malene Luick Lien, 89, Breckenridge, Minn., formerly Wahpeton, N.D., died Monday, Oct. 31, 2011 at St. Francis Healthcare Campus, Breckenridge. Malene Nerland was born Nov. 26, 1921 near Narbo, Norway. She grew up on a farm in Norway and married Fritz Pungar in Germany in 1946. She settled near Rosholt, S.D., where she met and married Donald Luick in 1952. They lived and farmed in Center Township, south of Wahpeton. Malene later moved to Wahpeton where she owned and operated "Malene's Beauty Shop" in Wahpeton for many years.
In 1989 she married John Lien at Bethel Lutheran Church, Wahpeton. Malene continued to stay busy in her retirement by taking care of some of her long-time customers' hair. John passed away in the mid 90s and Malene moved to St. Francis Nursing Home, Breckenridge, Minn., in 2006.
Malene was a member of Bethel Lutheran Church and enjoyed horseback riding when she was younger and loved to garden. Having lived in Europe during Nazi Occupation where freedoms were non-existent or very limited, she always appreciated the freedoms provided in the United States. Malene is survived by two sons. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, John Lien; her six brothers: Alf, Axel, Gustav, Einer, Elias and Ivan; and her three sisters: Bertha, Bjorkhild, and Lillemor.
