Obituary
Charles Jewell Oberg was born on October 24, 1922, at his parent's home just outside of Dwight, North Dakota, the only child of Walter and Miranda (Johnson) Oberg. In 1941, after graduating from Wahpeton High School, he went to Los Angeles and worked at a gas station. He moved back to Wahpeton that same year and attended the North Dakota State College of Science in Wahpeton in the spring of 1942. He then moved to St. Paul, MN and worked for the Northwest Airlines. He married Margaret Turbak in Minneapolis, MN on April 21, 1943. Two weeks later he joined the U.S. Navy and went to boot camp in Illinois. Two months later he attended Naval school at Navy Pier and was stationed at Wold Chamberlain Airfield in Minneapolis, MN and lived on the base. He was then stationed in San Diego for transportation overseas at Maimburg Island and was there when World War II ended. He received an Honorable Discharge on December 15, 1945.
In the summer of 1946, he opened a grocery store in Wahpeton called "West Side Grocery", which sold in August 1949. In 1950 he bought a Holsum Bread route, owning his own truck and delivered bread from Wahpeton to Cogswell until 1956. He then went to work for Manchester Biscuit Company (now known as Keebler) and worked as a salesman out of Wahpeton, Fargo and parts of Minnesota and South Dakota. In 1963 he worked for Bernard Foods and covered many states five days a week. In order to get "off the road", Chuck and Mare started a successful business, Chuck's Off Sale in 1968 until they retired in May of 1984. They sponsored Chuck's Off Sale softball teams of boys and girls. They boys put them on the "map" winning many tournaments and state titles.
Chuck and Marge built a home in Lake Placid, Florida and spent winters there and summers at their Ottertail Lake home. Marge died in 1994 and Chuck resided the last few years at Fourth Ave. Manor apartments in Wahpeton.
He was a member of Bethel Lutheran Church; lifetime member of the Wahpeton VFW Post No. 4324; Hafner-Miller-Ross American Legion Post No. 20; charter member of the Wahpeton Fraternal Eagles Aerie No. 2749; life member of Elks Lodge No. 2147; and the Buffalo Club, Wahpeton, ND; World War II Lastman's Club of Wahpeton and Breckenridge; and Ducks Unlimited. He loved being with his family, loved all sports, fishing, and all animals.
Chuck is survived by three sons and three daughters: Pan Stenslie, Wahpeton, Diana (Don) Klosterman, Mooreton, ND, Larry (Kathy) Oberg, Wahpeton, Dennis (Jenny) Oberg, Wahpeton, Denise (Ron) Prchal, Dalton, MN, and Randy Oberg and his fiancee, Tammy Tischner, Monticello, MN; 24 grandchildren and 39 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents, Walter and Miranda Oberg, his wife, Margaret Oberg and a granddaughter, Lily Barth.
