Obituary

Lawrence Poppel, 82 of Breckenridge, MN passed away Thursday, September 27, 2012 at St. Catherine’s Living Center, Wahpeton, ND. Funeral services will be Monday, October 1, 2012 at 10:30 a.m. at Immanuel Lutheran Church, Wahpeton, ND with Rev. Morris W. Stephens, Jr. & Rev. Alan R. Werth officiating and burial with military honors by the Wilkin Co. Honor Guard and the North Dakota National Guard at Fairview Memorial Gardens, Wahpeton, ND. Visitation will be Sunday, September 30, 2012 from 2:00 p.m. until 4:00 p.m. with a prayer service at 4:00p.m. all at Immanuel Lutheran Church, Wahpeton. There will also be visitation one hour prior to the funeral service at the church on Monday. Pallbearers are all his grandchildren and honorary pallbearers his great grandchildren, nieces & nephews. Organist will be Marge Hopkins with special music by Beth Dupree-soloist, Mindy Roller-soloist, Marge Hanson- accordion & Tim Bjorklund -trumpet. In lieu of flowers please send memorials in memory of Lawrence to: St. Catherine’s Living Center, 1307 7th St. N, Wahpeton, ND 58075.

Lawrence Poppel was born September 11, 1930 at Wahpeton, ND, the son of Charles and Augusta (Stuehrenberg) Poppel. He attended country school District 78 in Nordick Township for 8 years and then attended Breckenridge High School, graduating in 1948. On December 24, 1954 Lawrence was united in marriage to Ruth Ann Bjorklund in Sisseton, SD. They made their home in section twelve Nordick Township where they farmed until October 1995 when they moved into Breckenridge.

In 1954 Lawrence entered the US Army and was assigned to the US Air Force at Hahn, Germany. After being discharged he returned home and continued farming. He worked at Min-Dak Farmer’s Coop for ten winters driving sugar beet truck. Lawrence was an avid hunter & fisherman. He also enjoyed attending his children and grandchildren activities. Lawrence was an accomplished musician, he enjoyed playing his accordion at many different places and events. He attended Christ Lutheran Church, Mitchell Township until 1995 where he was the Sunday School superintendent for many years and treasurer until moving into Breckenridge. He is a member of Immanuel Lutheran Church, Wahpeton, a Nordick Township officer, a life member of the V.F.W. , the American Legion and the Military Order of the Cooties.

Lawrence is survived by his wife: Ruth Poppel, Breckenridge, MN; sons: Mike (Carol) Poppel, Breckenridge, MN & Bruce (Cheryl) Poppel, Breckenridge, MN; daughters: Monica (Richard) Miller, Fergus Falls, MN & Joan Poppel, Moorhead, MN; sisters: Margaret (Lyle) Barringer, Pelican Rapids, MN, Della (Carlton) Albert, Bonker Springs, KS & Joyce (Roy) Michael, Hoffman, IL; nine grandchildren: Melissa McIntosh, Kevin Poppel, Sara Poppel, Luke Poppel, Angela VanZee, Ryan Miller, Katie Link, Anna Donley & Grace Donley; four great grandchildren: Cole Christenson, Ellee McIntosh, Norah VanZee & Evan VanZee.

He is preceded in death by his parents: Charles & Augusta Poppel and a baby sister.
