Obituary
Salome (Sally) Ruth Hochstatter was born September 24, 1920, in a sod house on a homestead near Jordan, Montana, the daughter of Reverend John A. and Lydia (Sayler) Hochstatter. She was baptized on January 7, 1921, in Irvin, Alberta, Canada and confirmed by her father on April 2, 1933 in the German Reformed Church in Loveland, Colorado. She was raised in Hilda, Alberta and Neudorf, Saskatchewan, Canada, all locations where her father served German Congregational and Reformed churches. She attended grade schools in the same communities and graduated from Loveland High School in 1938. That same year she enrolled in Yankton College, Yankton, SD where her brother was a theology student and from where her father graduated with a Master of Arts degree in 1913. In 1940 she enrolled at Colorado State College of Agriculture and Mechanical Arts. In 1942 she graduated with a Bachelor of Music degree from the renamed Colorado State University.
She accepted a teaching position at the Granada, Colorado High School teaching chorus, band, health, and served as coach for the girls' basketball team.
On May 2, 1943, she was joined in marriage to 2nd Lieutenant R. Gordon Rudolph. The couple was married by her father in the Boulder, Colorado First Presbyterian Church. She returned to Granada and completed the teaching year and then joined Lt. Rudolph who was training with the Division Artillery, 103rd Infantry Division and Camp Claiborne, Louisiana and later in Camp Howze, Texas. In September 1944 she returned to Boulder, Colorado to live with her parents while her husband served during WWII in Alsace, France, Germany, Austria and Switzerland. While in Boulder she supervised the elementary school music program at Mapleton School. Captain Rudolph served overseas for 2 years and 4 months, returning on their third wedding anniversary in 1946.
On return from Europe her husband began employment with The Great Western Sugar Company in Wheatland, Wyoming. In 1948 he was transferred to Mitchell, Nebraska and in 1956 to The Northern Ohio Sugar Company in Fremont, Ohio. In 1968 They returned to Mitchell, Nebraska and in 1973 they moved to Wahpeton, ND where her husband was Vice-President of Agriculture, at MinnDak Farmers Cooperative.
Sally operated a private piano, voice and instrument studio in their home from 1950 to 2002. She taught piano and voice to over 1,000 students during the 52 years. Her pupils nearly always received a Superior Rating during the annual National Federation of Music Festivals contests. One of her pupils was the North Dakota State Baldwin competition winner. In addition, she coached several Miss North Dakota Pageant entrants and one was judged First Runner Up. She was a Nationally Certified Piano Teacher, a 39 year member of the Music Teachers National Association, a regional publicity committee director, Wilkin County Queen pageant coach and Miss Northwest Minnesota Queen coach, a 30 year member of the North Dakota Music Teachers Association and locally was a member of American Association of University Women, Literary Club, Christian Women, Fargo-Moorhead Music Teachers Association, a past member of Friends of the Library Club, and Twin Town Artist Series Board member. She recruited and directed the first United Church of Christ English Handbell Choir, was the church choir director and performed on the violin with the Valley Area Strings.
Sally is survived by her husband, Gordon Rudolph, Wahpeton, ND; her two daughters, Judith R. (Gus) Scully, Rapid City, SD, Nancy R. (Mark C.) Johnson, Moorhead, MN; her son, Grant K. (Victoria) Rudolph, Mill Valley, CA; 8 grandchildren, David, San Diego, CA, Mark (Katherine) Albuquerque, NM, Dan Scully, Rapid City, SD, Kayla, Katrina and Luke Johnson, Moorhead, MN, Blake and Selena Rudolph, Mill Valley, CA.
She was preceded in death by her parents; and her brother, Jonathan Hilton and his wife Ava Ruth and maternal and paternal grandparents.
