Obituary

Warren Everett Schuett was born December 21, 1918 in Minneapolis, MN, son of George and Ann (Hamerlik) Schuett. Warren graduated from Hankinson High School ("I never missed a day of school in 12 years~even with a broken leg~the janitor carried my up the stairs"), took his love of education to North Dakota State College of Science where he graduated from the Auto Mechanics department.

Warren joined the Army and served his country during WWII in New Guinea. He never talked much about the war. He was honorably discharged as a Staff Sergeant in 1945 and returned to Wahpeton to teach Auto Mechanics at NDSCS. He retired 39 years later having taught thousands of auto mechanics ("Doctors have it easy~the human body hasn't changed since inception~Mechanics have to work on engines that change every year") and took great pride each time a graduate found a job. NDSCS named the Automotive Technology building after him in 1986.

He was a Wahpeton City Councilman for 9 years, served as Mayor of Wahpeton for 19 years and was a two term North Dakota State Representative. He was extremely proud of Wahpeton's strong economic development and the growth of the College, and was a constant outspoken Ambassador for both.

Warren retired in 1984 and he and his wife, Dorothy, spent summers at their Ottertail lake cabin and winters in Mesa, AZ. he was an avid NY Yankees and Chicago Bears fan and loved dogs, lawn care, painting, Louis L'Amour Western Novels, outdoor barbecuing, new Oldsmobile's (and later, Buick's), Clint Eastwood and Dorothy's cooking.

Warren served on the Board of the United Church of Christ, Wahpeton, and was the Treasurer for over 20 years. He was a member of the Masonic Lodge, the El Zagel Shrine, the Community Development Corp, Elks, Eagles, V.F.W., American Legion and Rotary. He even tried to join the Knights of Columbus.

He was named Wahpeton 'Citizen of the Year' in 1984.

He is survived by and will be deeply missed by his loving wife of 60 years, Dorothy (Cooper), sons Bill (Nancy), Edina, MN, Timmy, Lake Mille Lacs, MN, Jeff "Whitey", Perham, MN, three grandchildren, Rebecca Wemer (Richard), Billy and Jaci, one great-granddaughter, Taylor Wemer; brothers George, Youngstown, AZ and Stan (Jeannine), Bel Air, MD; Sister-in-law Marge Hill, Fargo, Brother=in-law George Cooper, Jr. (Percy), Seal Beach, CA; many nieces and nephews, long-time friends and relatives.
