Lawrence Ulsaker Formerly Wahpeton

Lawrence T. Ulsaker, 83, Battle Lake, Minn., formerly Wahpeton, died Saturday, May 6, 1989, at Lake Region Hospital, Fergus Falls. The funeral will be Friday at 2 p.m. at First Lutheran Church, Battle Lake, with Rev. Harvey Pedersen officiating. Burial will be at Fairview Cemetery, Wahpeton.

There will be no visitation.

He was born Nov. 2, 1905, in Wahpeton where he graduated from Wahpeton High School and the North Dakota State College of Science. He then attended the U.S. Military Academy in West Point, N.Y. and was commissioned in the Army as a 2nd Lieutenant in 1930. He married Mabel Gran in Campbell, Minn., on June 3, 1933. During his 31 years in the Army, Lawrence's duty stations included: CCC camps in North Dakota and the Black Hills of South Dakota; Ft. Benning, Georgia; Camp Wolters, Texas and England, France and Belgium in 1943-45 where he was awarded the Bronze Star for Meritorious Service. From 1946-49 he served as professor of Military Science and Tactics at William Chrisman High School, Independence, Mo. He was Executive Commander of Camp McGill, Japan from 1949-52 and also toured to Korea during that time. From 1952-57 he commanded a basic training regiment at Fort Leonard Wood, Mo., until his retirement.

After a year at the University of Minnesota, Minneapolis/St. Paul, Lawrence and Mabel moved to Battle Lake in 1958 and built their home near Stony Point where they have resided ever since.

He is survived by his wife, Mabel; one son, Larry, Columbia, Mo.; a daughter, Mrs. Paul D. (Sonja) Peterson, Battle Lake; and six grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Ole K. Ulsaker; three brothers, Oscar, Carl and Walter; one sister, Mrs. Oscar (Althea) Erickson; and three infant children, Carl, Marcia and Maren.

Nilson Funeral Home, Battle Lake, is in charge of the funeral arrangements.
