Jennie Wanna, 82, Wahpeton resident
Nov. 10, 1916 - Aug. 9, 1999
Jennie U. Wanna, 82, Wahpeton, N.D., died Monday, Aug. 9, 1999, in Dennison, Texas.
Funeral services will be 10 a.m. on Saturday, Aug. 14, at the Wahpeton Church of God with Rev. Dan Wessell officiating. Burial will be at Fairview Memorial Gardens, Wahpeton.
Visitation will be on Friday from 7-9 p.m. at the Vertin-Munson Wahpeton Funeral Home and at the church from 9-10 a.m. on Saturday.
Jennie Canby was born on Nov. 10, 1916, in Macy, Neb., to David and Ida (Wolf) Canby. She grew up and attended grade schools in Macy as well as Decatur and Genoa Indian School, all in Nebraska. She graduated from high school at Haskell Indian School, Lawrence, Kan. Her post-education earned her a commercial cooking certificate two years later. She worked for the Bureau of Indian Affairs for most of her life. First, she was employed with the Haskell Indian School in Kansas for one year and transferred to the Flandreau Indian School, Flandreau, S.D., where she was for the following eight years. She was then transferred to the Wahpeton Indian School, where she remained until her retirement in 1980. She received a superior rating at retirement for her 33 years of government service.
She married Benedict G. Wanna in Pipestone, Minn. He died in 1987. After retirement, Jennie enjoyed traveling; especially visiting her grandchildren and seeing new places. She always enjoyed her sewing and Native American celebrations and dancing.
Jennie is survived by twin daughters, Loretta Fragus, Sherman, Texas, and Coretta (Arnold) Jefferson, Billings, Mont.; two sons, Lawrence R. Wanna, Fargo, and Ronald (Susan) Wanna, Lawrence, Kan.; nine grandchildren, and three great-grandchildren.
