Obituary

Funeral Thursday for Lester Ward, 86, Mooreton businessman and farmer

The funeral for Lester D Ward, 86, longtime Mooreton businessman and community leader, will be at 10:30 a.m. Thursday, Sept. 19, at Bethel Lutheran Church, Wahpeton, N.D.

He died Monday evening, Sept. 16, 1996, at St. Francis Medical Center, Breckenridge, Minn.

Rev. Kenneth Nyhusmoen of Mooreton Lutheran Church will officiate, with Rev. Father Albert Binder of St. Anthony's Catholic Church assisting. Interment will be at Fairview Memorial Gardens, Wahpeton.

Visitation will be today (Wednesday) from 4-8:30 p.m. at the Vertin-Munson Wahpeton Funeral Home. There will also be visitation one hour prior to the service at the church on Thursday.

Lester Denison Ward was born March 25, 1910, at Great Falls, Mont., to Elmer D. and Anna (DeVries) Ward. He came to Richland County with his parents in 1912 to Mooreton Township. Lester attended Mooreton Grade School near Highway 13. On Feb. 15, 1937, he married Leona Gast at Breckenridge, Minn. The couple farmed in Ibsen Township, rural Mooreton, and he also did custom work. He was a longtime Mooreton businessman, owning and operating Ward's Bar & Grill.

Lester was a member of the Mooreton Lutheran Church, Farmers Union, Mooreton Community Club, Wahpeton Eagles Club - Aerie #2749, an honorary chapter farmer of the Wahpeton FFA; and did volunteer work at the Bagg Bonanza Farm. He enjoyed visiting elderly people at rest homes and in their homes. He loved his family and took great delight in his grandchildren and great-grandchildren. As a hobby he enjoyed antique farm equipment.

Lester is survived by his wife, Leona Ward, Mooreton; nine children and their spouses, 23 grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren and 3 step-great-grandchildren; daughter Beverly (Robert) Klosterman, Mooreton, their children, Victor (Rynae), West Fargo; Dennis (Janet), Mooreton; Dr. Bruce (Sheila), Fargo; Neil, Mooreton; Cara (Jay) Myers, Colfax; son Wayne (Janice) Ward, Mooreton; their children, Pam (Kerry) Lindeman, Rochester, Minn.; Allen (Melinda) Mooreton; Sherri (Pat) McFarren, Grand Forks; Brenda (Troy) Klosterman, Mooreton; daughter Betty Milton, Fargo, her children, Jerrod (Brenda), Colorado; Joel (Amy) Chambers, Ariz.; daughter Belva (Marlow) Haverland, Abercrombie; their children, Shelly (Tim) Kowalski, Hickson, N.D.; Darin (Tessi), West Fargo; daughter Bonita (Vance) Gylland, Colfax, their children Karla, Fargo; Troy, Fargo; son William (Yvonne) Ward, Mooreton, their children, Aimee, Fargo; Adam and Alexis at home in Mooreton; daughter Cheryl (Kurt) Alpers, Eden Prairie, Minn.; their children, Kristopher and Erica at home; son Wilfred Ward, Abercrombie; son Willerd (Kari) Ward, Mooreton, their children Ryan, Brandon and Kaylee, at home; three brothers, Ralph (Eleanor) Ward and Roy Ward, both Minneapolis; and Donald Ward, Mooreton; half-brothers, Raymond (Pat) Ward, Wahpeton; and Warren (Lucille) Ward, Longmont, Colo.; and three half-sisters, Marian Ward, Mooreton; Marlys (Norman) Fenske, Cotton Lake, Minn.; and Karen (Robert) Schmidt, Bloomington, Minn.

He was preceded in death by his parents; three great-grandchildren; one sister, Grace Ward; and one half-brother, Elwood Ward.
