Obituary
Syver Wateland
Syver (Steve) Wateland, 79, Wahpeton, died Wednesday, Nov. 10 at St. Francis Hospital, Breckenridge. The funeral will be at 11 Saturday at Galchutt Lutheran Church, Rev. Jeff McCracken officiating. Burial will be in Fairview Memorial Gardens, Wahpeton.
Visitation will be Friday afternoon and evening with a prayer service at 7:30 at Vertin's-Wahpeton Funeral Home Chapel and at the church for the hour prior to the service.
He was born Oct. 30, 1903 at Galchutt to Torger and Sara (Ingot) Wateland. He was raised at Galchutt and attended local schools. He also attended North Dakota State School of Science. He married Ida Sletting Jan. 1, 1937 at Galchutt. They farmed in Abercrombie Township near Galchutt.
He was a member of the Galchutt Lutheran Church where he served as deacon. He was active in music, singing for quarters, and duos and solos for the church and the community for over 60 years. He was a charter member of the Alphean Male Chorus. He served on the Farmers Union Board, Galchutt, for 25 years and was a committeeman for the Richland County Agricultural Stabilization and Conservation Service.
Survivors include his wife, a brother and a sister, Melvin, Wahpeton; Mrs. Joseph (Viola) Sokness, Grandin, N.D.; and numerous nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by four sisters and three brothers.
Casket bearers will be nephews: Roger, Ralph, Harvey, Darrell and Hollis Quamme, Wallace, Jervis, Glenn and Kermit Wateland, and Dennis Sokness.
