Obituary

Mildred Terese Walby, 94, of Lidgerwood, ND, passed away peacefully on May 28, 2006, at MeritCare Hospital in Fargo, ND.

Mildred was born in Dickinson, ND, on January 16, 1912, to Anton and Mary Lisko, who both emigrated from Czechoslovakia. Her childhood was spent in Dickinson with her parents and 11 brothers and sisters. After graduating from Dickinson High School, she attended Abbott Hospital School of Nursing in Minneapolis, MN, and worked as an RN until her marriage in 1936 to Selmer "Shine" Walby. The couple moved to Lidgerwood, ND and made it their life's work to serve the community with the Walby Funeral Home and Furniture Store.

Mildred loved to have company and cook them good "stick-to-your-ribs" dinners. It was a rare sight to see any guest leave without a number of good sized doggie bags. She especially liked lively conversations and was not shy about voicing her opinions. She loved to garden and the annual flowers arranged around the Lidgerwood Golf Course were part of Mildred's earnest efforts. Her favorite was getting out for a game of golf (which she played until she was 89) and believed practice shots were just "a waste of time."

In recent years, her vision was severely compromised and she could no longer read conventional books nor watch TV. This did not stop her inveterate loyalty to the Minnesota Twins, whose progress she fervently followed by radio, or her enjoyment of mystery stories from the Talking Books Program. The last few years she resided in St. Gerard's Nursing Home in Hankinson, ND, and many times would tell friends and family that she knew she was in the best possible home for her at that time of her life.

Mildred was pre-deceased by her husband, "Shine" in July of 1992.

She is survived by her children: Mary Sue Skelton (Bill) of Park Rapids, MN, Judy Walby Diaz (Herminio) of Inver Grove Heights, MN, Robert James Walby of Las Vegas, NV; three sisters living in Dickinson, ND: Mary Bailey, Anne Narum, Agnes Kostelecky; and a brother: George Lisko. In addition, Mildred will be missed by her grandson: Bill Ryan of Salt Lake City, UT; special friend: Marcella Gettel, and many dear nieces and nephews and long time friends.

Funeral Mass will be Thursday, June 1, 2006, at 10:00 a.m. at St. Boniface Catholic Church in Lidgerwood, ND, with Fr. J. Vincent Fitzpatrick as celebrant and burial will be in Fairview Memorial Gardens in Wahpeton, ND. Visitation will be Wednesday from 4:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. with a prayer service at 7:00 p.m. at the Frank Family Funeral Home in Lidgerwood, and one hour prior to the service at the church.

Frank Family Funeral Home of Lidgerwood, ND, is in charge of the funeral arrangements.
