Obituary

'Shine' Walby, 85, Lidgerwood businessman

Selmer (Shine) Walby, 85, Lidgerwood, died Wednesday, July 29, 1992, at his home. The funeral service will be Saturday, Aug. 1, at 2 p.m. at the United Methodist Church, Lidgerwood, with Rev. Kenneth Eastin officiating. Burial will be in Fairview Memorial Gardens in Wahpeton.

Visitation will be today (Friday) from 9-9 in the Frank Funeral Home, Lidgerwood, and Saturday from 7-noon at the funeral home and one hour prior to the service at the church.

Pallbearers will be Frank Pearson, Dan Lisko, Bill Skelton, Fred Matson, Bill Ryan and Jim Lisko.

Honorary pallbearers will be all funeral directors in attendance.

Shine Walby was born Nov. 15, 1906 in Great Bend, N.D., the son of Gustav and Ida Mae (Popp) Walby. He attended Hankinson Public School, and then his parents moved to Rutland, N.D. and he attended and graduated from Ellendale High School. After graduating from Ellendale Industrial College, he taught country school near Kulm, N.D., for a year, followed by several years of teaching at Miller and Britton, S.D.

He then attended the University of Minnesota Mortuary College and in 1934 he came to Lidgerwood where he purchased the Hieber Furniture Store and Funeral Home. On Nov. 5, 1936, he married Mildred Lisko in Minneapolis. They owned and operated the funeral home, furniture store and ambulance service in Lidgerwood until 1970 when he sold the funeral home to Elmer and Marilyn Frank. After his retirement, he continued to assist in conducting funeral services for many years and in 1990 was formally recognized by the North Dakota Funeral Directors Association for 50 years of service as a funeral director. He also served as president of the association from 1960-61.

He was a member of the Lidgerwood Chamber of Commerce=, Harmony Masonic Lodge #53 A.F. & A.M., served on the Lidgerwood City Council, was a charter member of the Wahpeton Elks Club and was a member of the Lidgerwood United Methodist Church. Shine enjoyed golfing during his retirement years, as well as woodworking.

Shine is survived his wife, Mildred, Lidgerwood, a son, Robert Walby, South Pasadena, Calif., two daughters, Mrs. Bill (Mary Sue) Skelton, Park Rapids, Minn., and Judy Walby, Minneapolis, and three grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents and a brother, Alden.

The Garden of Prayer is located in the Memorial Gardens, which comprises the northern half of the cemetery.
