Dina “Dena” Campbell, 90 of Breckenridge, MN formerly of rural Fairmount, ND passed away Sunday, November 11, 2018 at St. Francis Nursing Home, Breckenridge, MN. Visitation will be Thursday, November 15, 2018 from 5-7 p.m. followed by the prayer service at 7 pm at the Frank Family Funeral Home, Hankinson, ND. Visitation will continue on Friday, November 16, 2018 from 10-11 am followed by the funeral service at 11 am at Immanuel Lutheran Church, Hankinson, ND. Burial will be at Fairview Memorial Gardens, Wahpeton, ND. Rev. Sean Daenzer will officiate.
Dina Joyce Bellin (known as Dena to most) was born to Lillian Bellin April 5th, 1928, in Belford Township, Richland County, N.D. She was raised throughout rural Hankinson living with her grandparents, Herman and Frediricka Bellin and later her aunt and uncle, Herbert and Lillian Bellin. She attended country school and Hankinson Public School, graduating from Hankinson High School in 1946. She worked as a waitress and telephone operator in Wahpeton, N.D.
On April 15, 1951, Dena married Edward Campbell in San Diego, Calif., where Edward was stationed in the U.S. Army during the Korean War. After his deployment to the Panama Canal, Dena returned to Richland County, awaiting Ed’s safe and honorable discharge. She and Ed raised their family and farmed in rural Fairmount, N.D., and Dena assisted with Ed’s auctioneer business. Ed passed away January 10, 1996.
Dena stayed on the family farm for a few years after Ed died before deciding to retire to Fairmount, N.D. She became a big fan in the stands of grandchildren’s games. She also worked summers for the North Dakota Tourism Department information booth on the N.D./S.D. border. She traveled with friends. In 2013, she entered the St. Francis Nursing Home after Parkinson’s and other health issues made living independently difficult. She was able to return home for a few months with the help of home health care services, but deterioration in her health caused her to return and become a full-time resident at St. Francis. Dena loved to garden and bake and raised chickens and ducks each year. She loved crossword puzzles. Summers were filled with splendid aromas of various fruits and vegetables being canned. She will be remembered for her love and devotion to her children, for baking the most delicious pies, bars, cookies, and holiday candies (even her flops). Dena was a member of Immanuel Lutheran Church, Hankinson.
Dena will be missed by those who survive her: sons: James of Austin, Minn.; Charles (Gail) of Fairmount, N.D.; Michael (Janet) of Belle Plaine, Minn.; and Mathew, Fairmount; daughter: Erin (Steven) Wood of Crary, N.D.; son-in-law: Gerald Steinert, Apple Valley, Minn.; grandchildren: Gregory (Joy) Steinert, Cottage Grove, Minn.; Nicole (Tom) Cole, Ham Lake, Minn; Jason (Lindsey) Campbell, Kasson, Minn; Danielle (Matt Graffunder) Campbell, Plymouth, Minn; Ryan Campbell, Fairmount; Kristen (Roy) Martin, Fairmount; Katelyn (Andrew) Greenmyer, Stirum, N.D.; Eric (Amber) Campbell, Lonsdale, Minn.; Kyle (Shannon Beckel) Campbell, Northfield, Minn.; Lauren Campbell, Belle Plaine, Minn; Madison, Zachary, Christopher, and Andrew Wood, all of Crary, N.D.; 14 great-grandchildren; brothers-and sisters-in-law, Bernard Schmanski, Madison, S.D.; Evelyn Campbell, Bismarck, N.D., and Mabel (Harvey) Hagen, Spokane, Wash.; many nieces, nephews, and cousins.
