Melvin was born on April 10, 1934 in rural Fairmount, ND to Loren and Elsie (Krause) Manock. He grew up on the family farm and attended country school in DeVillo Township. Melvin never finished eighth grade, taking over the duties of the farm after the death of his father.

Soon after, Melvin retired from farming but he still worked the land for Doug Toussaint as a hired hand. Melvin and Darlene continued to live on the farm until 2013 when they moved into Wahpeton.

Melvin was a member of Bethel Lutheran Church and the Eagles Club in Wahpeton. When he wasn't working he enjoyed dancing, hunting for ducks, deer, and pheasants, and fishing. He was also the sponsor for the family racing team for 15 years. Family was important to Melvin and he went to as many of his grandkid's events that he could.
