Earl Glenn Mittag, 83 of Wahpeton, ND passed away Thursday, October 28, 2010 at his home in Wahpeton. Funeral services will be Monday, November 1, 2010 at 10:00 a.m. at Immanuel Lutheran Church, Wahpeton, ND with Rev. Morris W. Stephens officiating. Burial will be at Fairview Memorial Gardens, Wahpeton with military honors by: Hafner-Miller-Ross American Legion Post No. 20, Woody Keeble VFW Post 4324, Wahpeton & the North Dakota National Guard, Fargo. Visitation will be Sunday, October 31, 2010 from 2:00 p.m. until 5:00 p.m. with a prayer service at 4:00 p.m. all at Immanuel Lutheran Church, Wahpeton, ND. There will also be visitation one hour prior to the service at the Church. Pallbearers are Orville Fenske, Gale Tollefson, Norman Bohn, Wayne Dietz, Dale Medenwald & Bob Rugenstein. Honorary pallbearers will be"All his coffee friends, Wahpeton Firemen, Wahpeton Bus Drivers & all who called him friend". The organist will be Liz Mumm with special music by Brian Olsen.
Earl Glenn Mittag was born January 9, 1927 in Wahpeton, ND, the son of Charles (Irish) & Mathilda (Tillie) (Budack) Mittag. He was baptized on January 22, 1927 and confirmed on June 8, 1941 at Immanuel Lutheran Church, Wahpeton. He graduated from Wahpeton High School and then entered the US Army on November 27, 1945 and was discharged April 27, 1947. On September 2, 1949 he was united in marriage to Mary J. OBrien at Immanuel Lutheran Church. In 1949 he started his sand and gravel business until retiring in 1991. His winter jobs were truck driving for Schuler Grain, NDSCS Maintenance Dept. & driving the athletic school bus for Wahpeton.
He traveled to all 50 states, most of them with family & friends in their pickup camper. He also traveled to all four Canadian Providence, Europe, Africa & Mexico. He enjoyed spending winters in Mission, TX, bee keeping, traveling, camping, hunting, fishing & playing cards. He could repair anything that needed fixing and volunteered at the Richland-Wilkin County Food pantry as a groundskeeper.
He was a life member at Immanuel Lutheran Church, Wahpeton where he held several offices, Hafner-Miller-Ross Post No. 20 American Legion, 40 et 8 & retired Wahpeton Fire Department.
Earl is survived by his wife: Mary Mittag, Wahpeton, ND; a son: Dwaine Mittag, Renton, WA; 2 daughters: Karen (Tim) Stroklund, Wahpeton, ND & Janel (Dave) Nordick, Wahpeton, ND; a sister: Carol Vitello, San Antonio, TX; grandchildren: Sara (Josh) Turski, Eric (Jennifer) Mittag, Neil (Rebecca) Stroklund, Rosemara Stroklund, Sharla (Thaddeus) Laugisch, Cristine Morris, Wade Nordick & Ashley Nordick & great grandchildren: Marissa & Michael Mittag, Tiffany Turski, Abigail Morris, Kaden Stroklund, Rya Laugisch & Isaac Stroklund.
He is preceded in death by his parents: Irish & Tillie; sister: Joyce Martinson & a brother: Roy Mittag.
