Obituary

Ivan Ralph Mitzel was born on October 21, 1921, the son of William and Alma (Gutzmer) Mitzel on their farm northeast of Wahpeton. Ivan graduated from Wahpeton High School and attended State School of Science. After graduation he worked as a mechanic at the Wahpeton Chevrolet garage. He married Joyce Hudson in 1943; they made their home in Breckenridge and raised their two children. Ivan joined the US Army in May of 1944. After his discharge from the service in May of 1946 he joined Hudson Plastering Contractors; the business became Hudson & Mitzel which he ran until plastering became less popular. Ivan then began his carpentry career in which he continued to stay active until the time of his illness in October of 2008.

Ivan was a member of Breckenridge Lutheran Church, American Legion, and a lifetime VFW member. He enjoyed metal detecting, wood working, tending to his roses, and activities at Star Lake. He was a great fan of the Breckenridge Cowboys Football and Basketball. He truly was the happiest when he was working with his hand.

Ivan is survived by his wife of 67 years, Joyce, Breckenridge; his son, Ivan Ralph Jr. (Su) Mitzel, Lavon, Texas; his daughter, Shir (Russ) Warner, Tucson, AZ; two grandchildren, Todd (Lisa) Warner, Grand Forks, ND, Danika (Casey) Noreen, Grand Forks, ND; 4 great-grandchildren, Lexy, Hudson, Riley and Conner; his two brothers, Floyd (Pat) Mitzel, Fergus Falls, MN, and William (Pat) Mitzel, Kirkland, WA; his two sisters-in-law, Agatha Mitzel and Dorothy Mitzel, both of Wahpeton; his brother-in-law, Cyril Hudson, Wahpeton; and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; brothers, Marvin and Lyle; and his sister and brother-in-law, Leona and James Snider.

In lieu of flowers the family requests that donations be made to Breckenridge Lutheran Church and St. Francis Healthcare Campus.
